I love helping students to remove barriers to success building and higher educational opportunities. Nurturing and advising first-generation students to focus on skills and confidence building has resulted in a 100% high school graduation rate and 98% of our graduates enroll in college each year. There is no greater joy than helping young people to discover that they are capable, loveable and bigger than the environment that they currently know.

My background (in psychology and counseling) have allowed me to bring my interest in the human condition into what I do with Upward Bound. I believe in recognizing thepotential within each individual and equipping them with the personal “tools” to succeed at whatever it is they choose to do. I have found that, most often, the key to success relies way more on preparation and sense of purpose than actual ability. I am an advocate of setting expectations high enough to make a difference in one’s life but within reach to establish a solid sense of accomplishment. To paraphrase Malcolm X, “Education is our passport to the future” – but education should be seen as a gift we give ourselves and should not depend on any one person or institution. I believe students should expect the world—and be willing to fight for it.

For over thirty years, I have found immense joy in teaching and advising high school students to prepare for college. Here at Upward Bound, I assist students through planned and incidental learning activities that present them options available in post- secondary education. It is my duty to encourage students to make realistic and pragmatic decisions for their academic success and future. Therefore, I serve as a catalyst to move students towards serious career exploration and wise college selection. My desire is that students will acquire the knowledge that “Real joy comes not from ease or riches or the praise of men, but from doing something worthwhile.”

I like many of our Upward Bound students had great grades in school and a dream of someday attending college; however, a lack funds to pay for college and exposure to college were obstacles that stood in my way. With the help of my high school guidance counselor, I gained much needed knowledge about financial aid, college applications, and majors and minors. My role with Upward Bound will allow me to work as a partner with our student’s guidance counselors to insure that they not only have access to college but are prepared when they get there.
